WHY RESPONSIVE WEBSITE? DOES GOOGLE LIKE IT?

Google wants all websites to be mobile friendly and provide the user with results that have been optimized for their device, from mobile phone devices to tablet devices.

According to the announcement on its Webmaster Central blog, Google said:

“Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results. Consequently, users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results that are optimized for their devices.”

To be clear, Google has NEVER in their history revealed the exact date of a monumental algorithm change.

That date was April 21, 2015. And furthermore, Google specifically stated that a website’s mobile friendliness will “have a significant impact in our search results.”

WHAT IS A MOBILE FRIENDLY AND RESPONSIVE WEBSITE?

Q. Is your website mobile-friendly?

Q. Is your website responsive?

To help you better understand what is meant by a mobile friendly and responsive website, view the following examples on both your laptop/desktop, your tablet and mobile devices (or re-size your browser to see how the content re-arranges itself);

You will see that the website content being viewed becomes optimized, depending on the device upon which it is being viewed due to the technology used in the design and development of the website. Responsive websites are developed with responsive html, responsive css framework (Twitter Bootstrapgetskeleton etc.) and responsive images.

These responsive websites are able to re-configure themselves, providing the user with the best viewing experience possible depending on the device it is being viewed upon, thereby allowing the user optimal usability based on their screen dimensions.– allows for easy reading, navigation with a minimum of resizing, panning and scrolling – across a wide range of devices including smart phones, tablets, laptops, etc

And this is what Google now wants to be demonstrated in all the websites it is showing as ranked when being searched for.

The following are examples of non-mobile friendly and non responsive websites;

WHAT IF MY WEBSITE IS NOT MOBILE-FRIENDLY AND NON RESPONSIVE?

Google will penalize your search rankings and all the valuable SEO your site has currently could be for nothing if your site is not responsive across different devices and provide optimised viewing. And will be impacted negatively on search rankings.

In plain English, websites with mobile compatibility will be awarded higher search engine rankings than those sites without.

WHAT IF I GET A RESPONSIVE WEBSITE?

By having a responsive website that provides an optimised viewing experience across a wide range of devices and also increases your customer satisfaction with a much more user friendly website.

Any beyond all else, Google will like your website and give it more favourable ranking than other non-responsive websites.
